🧠 The Hard Stuff
Water, the life-sustaining elixir, offers a multitude of benefits beyond quenching your thirst. It’s a cornerstone - NAY - cornercompound (🤓) of our body’s ability to survive and thrive. Water makes up about 60% of our bodies, so it’s no shock that the world is kind of obsessed with staying hydrated, and here’s why:
👀 Stay awake, stay alert: Since our brains are mostly water, drinking it helps us stay focused, think more clearly and feel energized.
💪🏿 Shed some pounds: Water is like an express train picking up and removing by-products of fat from our bodies (choo choo).
🤤 Reduces hunger: Often when we’re thirsty it’s actually our body signalling a hunger response. Drinking water before meals reduces our meal intake.
🚽 Flush away the nasty stuff: It rids our bodies of waste through sweating and urination, helping us beat off infections and reduces kidney stones
✨ Glow like JLo: NOUGH’ SAID*
Come on people - all that goodness from the natural resource so many of us take for granted, and yet we still all struggle to drink enough water. Why?!
We’re wired for short-term gain, so may often prioritize other tasks in our day then to stop and pour ourselves some water. Our habits define us and our subconscious takes the wheel so if we haven’t integrated hydration into our routines, we will often overlook it. The modern world is just savage at marketing, giving us sugary and artificial options that distract us from the goodness of water. It’s hard to chug back water when you’re busy chugging back coffee (she writes as she sips her coffee), and the demands of our busy lives usually require a latte coffee (←not a spelling mistake, read that again)
Try out some tools below to help get you more anchored into a hydration routine, helping yourself reach your weight loss goals, fight off diseases, stay sharp and shine bright like a diamond.
*In case you do need an explanation: Water is a top notch anti-aging mechanism that reduces wrinkles. It moisturizes your skin to keep it fresh and smooth!
🍦 The Soft Stuff
Consider hydration as a secret weapon in your emotional arsenal. Just as a well-timed pause can soothe a racing mind, a glass of water can do wonders for your mental state. Each glass is a shield against the daily wear and tear on your emotional well-being.
Proper hydration supports the brain's functions, enhancing focus and mental clarity. You're providing your brain with the fuel it needs to navigate life's challenges with a clear head. It also plays a pivotal role in mood regulation. Dehydration can lead to irritability and low energy, making even the smallest inconveniences feel overwhelming. By staying hydrated, you equip yourself with the resilience needed to manage stress and emotional fluctuations (like those times when Netflix hasn’t released the new batch of Love Island episodes yet and you just can’t deal.)
So ya, water is kinda a big deal. It's a tangible way to invest in your emotional health and a reminder that self-care goes beyond bubble baths and meditation (although, we would like to advocate for those things too, they’re quite spectacular).
3 Tools
1. Water Tech -fancy bottles and tracking apps
There is a tech-enabled water bottle tracker option out there for everyone. Whatever you’re into; having your every sip tracked so you stay aware, or having your bottle be your daily affirmation reminder to keep you motivated, or having your tunes blasting from your bottle because the swag on that is just undeniable, there are options GALORE!
So whether you use a water bottle with marked measurements or a hydration app to track your water intake throughout the day, these can motivate you and keep you accountable. If you really want to step up, you can set hourly goals or reminders to sip water, making it a conscious habit.
Don’t know where to start? Me neither, but Martha Stewart recommends these 11 and she seems like the type to know how to hydrate.
2. Anchoring routine 🧠 🍦
Make your water intake a daily routine by anchoring that behaviour to an existing habit you already have.
For example, set the goal to drink a cup of water:
After you brush your teeth (keep a glass beside your toothbrush)
Before your morning coffee (fill your mug with water before pouring your Cup O’ Jo)
Before every meeting (hear the notification ping and sip up!)
Before you go to bed (keep a filled up bottle beside your phone charger station)
Pairing hydration with established habits makes it easier to remember and becomes an integral part of your day.
(P.s. you can try the anchoring technique for any new habit you’re trying to achieve!).
3. Flavoured Water 🍦
Take your water from bland to grande with a little flavour flav! If you don’t think the taste of water is quenchingly brilliant already, try infusing it with slices of fruits, herbs, or even a splash (or many slices) of citrus.
This adds a refreshing twist and encourages you to reach for your water bottle more often, which is really the goal here.
