Accepting Compliments Like a Boss
Fumbling praise like it's your job (Ep. 12)

🚀 But first, another sponsor shoutout👇🏾👇🏻👇🏿
AI won’t take your job, but a person using AI might. That’s why 500,000+ professionals read The Rundown – the free newsletter that keeps you updated on the latest AI news and teaches you how to apply it in just 5 minutes a day.

THE CULPRIT…
Compliment Confusion
Picture this - you spent hours crafting a newsletter*, researched all these topics, hand drew really amateur drawings to spruce it up, spent way too long a pun-worthy caption. 5 hrs go by, you send the puppy out and someone says…”good job, that was funny”. You awkwardly downplay every ounce of work, walls hit and tears (YES there are tears ppl) and say “oh, it’s nothing”. We’ve all been there, actually we’re probably all there right now 😳 | ![]() what do I do with this?! |
Rejecting a Compliment is like Rejecting a Gift
Rejecting…or more accurately….awkwardly rambling and having a brain meltdown in the presence of a compliment sounds harmless but it’s kinda a small, big deal. This act can activate regions of the brain that reinforce negative beliefs about our abilities and worth. Over time, this pattern can lead to a downward spiral in self-esteem and confidence - all from a tiny, seemingly harmless compliment. On top of that, discounting compliments signals to others that their opinions and expressions of admiration are not valued (oops) - not nice.

THE SHIFT…
Embrace the Grace 🙏🏽
It's time to shift our mindset and embrace the power of accepting compliments with grace and gratitude and probably still a huge dose of awkward. Instead of deflecting or minimizing praise, practice acknowledging and internalizing the positive feedback you receive. By cultivating a sense of self-worth and appreciation for your accomplishments, you not only uplift yourself but also inspire confidence and admiration in others. | ![]() YAS PLEASE |
The Art of Accepting
Accepting compliments isn't just about boosting our ego (although, I mean, who doesn’t appreciate a little boost of dopamine once in a while); it's a fundamental aspect of signalling our self worth to others and the world. Plus when we graciously accept compliments, we validate the efforts and intentions of the person offering them, strengthening our social bonds and building a culture of encouragement and appreciation - what a beautiful world to live in!

THE TOOLS…
See What Sticks
1 // HYPER awareness
As with all limiting thoughts, we need to be hyper aware. Next time you see someone gearing up to deliver a compliment just tell yourself silently (BE COOL, BE COOL, BE COOL) and let out a cool, calm, collected “Thank you”. No need to expand on that, give the novel of how it was easy if you think about it, no rambling. Just leave it at that and move on.
2 // Gratitude Journal
Start a gratitude journal to record compliments and positive feedback you receive each day - this doesn’t have to be grand, this can be as simple as receiving a smile from a stranger for you holding the door open. Reflect on these moments of recognition and allow yourself to fully absorb the appreciation and validation they offer. Over time, this practice will help reinforce your sense of self-worth and confidence.
3 // Pay It Forward
Challenge yourself to pay compliments to others freely and sincerely. By actively recognizing and affirming the strengths and accomplishments of those around you, you create a culture of positivity and encouragement. Not only does this benefit others, but it also reinforces the importance of accepting compliments graciously in your own life.
