The Comparison Game 🎭

Find peace through the Me vs. Me game (Ep. 22)

THE CULPRIT…
Comparison Killer ⏰

Picture this: You're scrolling through socials, and every post seems to scream success and happiness. There's a friend who just got a fancy new job, another who's vacationing in Bali, and yet another who just posted a flawless selfie from a high-end event. Instead of feeling inspired, you feel a sinking feeling in your stomach. Why isn't your life that picturesque? Why aren't your achievements that grand? Suddenly, your own accomplishments feel trivial, and your self-esteem takes a nosedive. 😔

Me. Vs. Them

Only Ls in the Comparison Game
Comparing ourselves to others is a natural human tendency, but it’s a game where there are no winners, only losers. Neurologically, this habit of endless comparison strengthens neural pathways associated with negative thinking, making those icky thoughts more frequent and automatic. It locks us into a cycle of self-criticism and discontent, where our achievements seem never enough and our failures are magnified. That means bring on the feelings of jealousy, inadequacy and a deeply ingrained sense of personal dissatisfaction. No bueno.

THE SHIFT…
Me vs. Me 🌟

It's time to pivot from the relentless competition with others to a more fulfilling competition with yourself. Focus on surpassing your own previous limits and achievements, the Me vs. Me game baby. When you shift your focus from comparison to self-improvement (self being the operative word here), every small progress becomes a cause for celebration 🌟

Me Vs. Me

From The Science of Self-Comparison

Shifting from external comparisons to internal benchmarks involves a profound psychological transformation. Neuroscience reveals that when we focus on our own progress rather than others', we engage parts of the brain associated with self-motivation and personal satisfaction. This self-referential processing helps in reinforcing our identity and values, leading to enhanced mental well-being. And enhanced mental well-being just brings all the good stuff into our fields - hello creativity, resilience and happiness!

THE TOOLS…
See What Sticks

1 // Me vs. Me Quarterly Reflection
Set up a you-date every quarter. Take this time to reflect on your past 3 months and how you’ve grown. Take not of some wins, some losses and how you’ve changed in the last quarter. This anchors you in “self” and encourages you to celebrate your own race.

2 // Social Media Detox
Take regular breaks from social media to disconnect from the constant barrage of comparison triggers. Use this time to reconnect with yourself and your real-world surroundings.

3 // Define Your Vision of Success
Instead of measuring your success against others, set personal goals that are aligned with your values and aspirations. Celebrate every small victory along the way.
